The end

by Gerald Price

For ages the light prevailed
and the darkness scurried from it,
hiding beneath all objects.

And eons of energy were expended,
huge volumes of brightness
invaded the universe,
sending night to its outer domains.

But the light could not last,
having a finite fuel,
and so it died at its source --
the pendulum swung again.

Silently the blackness peered
from its refuges,
then leaped -- chasing light
back to its dead sources.

And darkness ruled supreme,
and the creatures of darkness
traveled freely their wide domain,
and light, having no roots, no seeds,
was forgotten and was no more.

Hail thee, Beelzebub, ruler of
the inexhaustible.
