"... The kickoff of the first lady's campaign against obesity coincided with the release of a new report by Surgeon General Regina Benjamin on obesity, which warns that the rate of obesity among adults has more than doubled since 1980. Among children, the obesity rate tripled in the same period.
At the same event, Benjamin noted that more than two-thirds of adults -- and one out of three children -- are overweight or obese. Benjamin also made it a personal issue, noting that there are many Americans like her who struggle with their weight.
In the coming weeks, Benjamin is expected to lay out details of a plan that will involve communities, businesses and government in tackling the epidemic of obesity. The first lady's primary focus will be on children.
Parents will need some help, Mrs. Obama said, in terms of receiving good nutritional information and making sure that children are given healthier options at school, where they get most of their meals. But parents will also have to make changes themselves, by making sure that children spend less time in front of the TV and more time being active.
The first lady also admitted that it's gotten a lot easier to live healthily since she moved to the White House.
After all, Mrs. Obama is, as Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sibelius said while introducing her, 'the most famous of vegetable gardeners'." -- Brenda Wilson for National Public Radio
"... HEAL Appalachia is the name of a new program sponsored by the Mountain States Health Alliance/East Tennessee State University Obesity Collaborative focused on bringing together numerous organizations from Tennessee and Virginia to find a solution to the problem of obesity, especially in children.
Major efforts to move forward with the project will begin this spring when up to 25 grants of $2,000 each will be given to local groups....
Using HEAL as an acronym for 'healthy eating, active living,' the group hopes to incorporate ideas from throughout the region's communities to bring a variety of solutions to the obesity problem.
The project will focus on four main areas: reducing obesity in children, reducing obesity in the workplace, reducing obesity in places of worship and creating training programs for rural physicians in obesity intervention...." -- Herald & Tribune, 2/16/10

Our health is something on which EVERYONE has a BIG opinion!!! And we've every right to do so! These are a few thoughts by someone who has been down several roads, both traditional (mainstream medical) and so-called alternative. I'm not so sure those are fair reference words though.
Perhaps we should think about our nutrition more seriously and often -- getting our colon clean, organic foods, good rest, clean water. Do you know, have you thought that almost all dis-eases take care of themselves with just those basic things? According to Dr. Christopher, Dr. Schultz, Dr. Norman Walker, Paul Bragg, Patricia Bragg, Dr. Lorraine Day, Hulda Clark and others, ninety percent of people with health care issues find that those problems go away (and pretty quickly) when we get to and take care of basics. And those people certainly have a background to speak from. Some lived to be almost 100 years old and were still wrting books almost to the very end! Others were not supposed (according to mainstream medical professionals) to be alive past forty or fifty years of age but lived instead very long and productive lives!
Organic fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds, whole grains (not whole grain products), and water! Those are what we need. And also cleaning of our colons from years of too much junk food. How can we expect to be healthy eating mainly fast foods, sodas, sugars (in various form), and sometimes absolutely no fresh vegetables or fruits? That's where the nutrition is, neverminding that a lot of people out here are dehydrated -- not just from not drinking water, but from drinking instead lots of coffee and sodas. Those things dehydrate us more. We need MORE water, and those liquids rob our bodies of nutrients like calcium. We need those missing nutrients to build healthy bodies, since our body is 75-80% WATER!
We do have some wonderful people here in this country who can help us get well, to actually address the issues, most of which are constipation and malnutrition. But here's what happens to too many of them: they get fined and run out of the state or country. Could that be because they do not prescribe drugs, medications, support the pharmacutecal corporations that advertise at an astounding rate on both television and radio, in the process of brainwashing folks into believing that it's just expectedly normal to go to a medical professional and get a(nother) prescription for each perceived and possible ailment?
I attended a lecture given by a physican a few years ago who was brought before the Board because she was not prescribing enough medications. She was helping her patients instead to detoxify, and they were getting well! The Board was not impressed. That particular woman doctor had to leave the Board meeting and get on an airplane to emigrate from this country. As far as I know, she's practicing still in another one. Without a doubt she is not by herself. Not many have what it takes to take a courageous stand and face the possible consequences of it. Luckily we have some good ones here still who are interested in really helping us to be healthy, taking their stands in different ways, writing newsletters, practicing, and not engaging in "traditional" mainstream medicine
We do need our emergency rooms for the medical professionals to put us back together on occasion, and then we can heal amazingly fast -- when we truly take care of ourselves before, during and after issues. What do we have to lose (besides additions to sugar and empty calories in too much junk food) by learning and trying?
